- Homebuyers advised: insulate rather than generate
ImageHome owners should take steps to better insulate their home, rather than fork out for expensive gadgets like wind turbines, a trade association working in the UK Property market has revealed. According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), UK Property owners are better off spending money on making their home more energy efficient than trying to create energy using wind turbines or solar panels. The comments come after a survey of 1,000 households by construction company Redrow, found that converting a loft into an extra living space has become a popular option amongst home owners. Three quarters of people currently living in a traditional two-storey home said they were attracted to the thought of adding an extra floor. Experts believe the loft-conversion trend is not only profitable in terms of increasing House prices, but also helps to better insulate a property, with outdated insulation materials being taken out, and more energy efficient products brought in. FMB spokesperson, Richard Diment said: "If you look at the Home Information Packs (HIPS) coming in from June then all homes are going to have to have an energy grading and so undoubtedly people will be looking to achieve a higher energy rating."One thing we would recommend people to do would be to insulate their home as well as they can before they start sticking on wind turbines. "Insulation reduces the amount of heat used and therefore reduces your carbon footprint. If you are doing a loft conversion then that is an ideal time to add insulation and double glazing. Basically this is about efficiency of cost."
